Acetabular dysplasia in adult hips of a Saudi population. A possible relation to coxarthrosis.

چکیده
OBJECTIVE To evaluate acetabular morphology and the prevalence of dysplasia in a Saudi population, and compare it with others in different geographical areas. METHODS The study took place at King Fahd University Hospital, Al-Khobar, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia from May 2005 to April 2006. We recruited radiographs of 104 patients of 40-88 years of age. We digitally measured the center edge angle (CEA) of both hips. RESULTS Of the 208 hips examined, 3 hips (1.44%) had mild-to-moderate acetabular dysplasia but there was no case with severe dysplasia (CEA<or=20 degree). CONCLUSION The study shows that acetabular dysplasia is very rare in adult Saudi hip joints, which are less dysplastic than many other populations. This could be a contributing factor for the very uncommon prevalence of hip osteoarthritis in this population.

Background and Objective: Arthrosis of the hip joint is one of the most common complications of patients and many efforts have been made to find its etiology. One of the subjects important for researchers is morphologic parameters of the hip joint and its relationship with osteoarthritis of this joint. Since these parameters themselves are affected by physical parameters of the body and the rac...
متن کاملHip contact stress during normal and staircase walking: the influence of acetabular anteversion angle and lateral coverage of the acetabulum.
Hip contact stress is considered to be an important biomechanical factor related to development of coxarthrosis. The effect of the lateral coverage of the acetabulum on the hip contact stress has been demonstrated in several studies of hip dysplasia, whereas the effect of the anterior anteversion remains unclear. Therefore, the joint hip contact stress during normal level walking and staircase ...
متن کاملFocal concavity of posterior superior acetabulum and its relation with acetabular dysplasia and retroversion in adults without advanced hip osteoarthritis
BACKGROUND Although little is known, a limited number of three-dimensional computed tomography (CT) images of the pelvis present focal concavity of posterior superior acetabulum. The purpose of the present study was to investigate this morphologic deformity and its relation with dysplasia and retroversion in adults who were expected to have the original morphology of the acetabulum after growth...
متن کاملDevelopmental dysplasia of the hip: is acetabular retroversion a crucial factor?
OBJECTIVE The objective of this study was to investigate a possible relation between congenital hip dysplasia and acetabular retroversion and to explore the eventual influence of the latter in the surgical decision for periacetabular osteotomy. MATERIALS AND METHODS We assessed the classical morphological characteristics of both hips, with an additional newly described retroversion index. The...
متن کاملIs there a place for shelf acetabuloplasty in the management of adult acetabular dysplasia? A survivorship study.
We followed up 76 consecutive hips with symptomatic acetabular dysplasia treated by acetabular shelf augmentation for a mean period of 11 years. Survival analysis using conversion to hip replacement as an end-point was 86% at five years and 46% at ten years. Forty-four hips with slight or no narrowing of the joint space pre-operatively had a survival of 97% at five and 75% at ten years. This wa...
